In 1988 I was appointed to a position in the social studies department at Saugerties High School.  I was hired to develop the newly mandated Participation in Government course.  I designed this semster-long course to involve a hands-0n approach to learning about civic awareness and public issues.  The class centered around a number of simulations and was anchored by a requirement that each student complete a community project.  During my years there I was faculty advisor for a student group which sponsored bias-awareness activities and started a “Celebration of Diversity Week” program which lasted for several years.
